Warm-up Activities
  1. Do you only play video games on a certain system? Answer the question using one of these conjunctions to explain why — if, because, but.
  2. Name five things that can be associated with the number billions.
  3. Draw a mind map, with either hardware or software as the centre word, and around it all the things to do with that word.
  4. Which are better in your opinion, rural villages or packed cities?
  5. Write a ten word sentence about Britain. Then write a ten word sentence about your country.
  6. Finish the sentence — “The best place to view a full moon is...”
  7. Take the category “somewhere to watch something special”. What places can you think of for that category that are 1. everyday places, 2. famous places, or 3. interesting places.
  8. Who is Snoop Dogg and what are bobbleheads? Are there any similar people and collectibles from your country?
  9. Find a connection between the two topics “pop culture” and “hobbies” with one of these words — fan, inspire, or experience.
  10. Make one sentence for each of these three phrases — well-known, modern-day, and next-level.
  11. What are some positive things about the following — trying something new, not drinking alcohol, and being a student.
  12. Take the word generation. Think of as many words beginning with the letters g, e, and n that can describe this word.
  13. Imagine you are going away to study at college, or move to a new city, or even to live in a new country. What five things would you take that you cannot live without.
  14. Draw a line with free written on the left end and 1,500 (in your currency) written on the right end. How much would you pay for the latest piece of mainstream technology? Mark yourself on the line.
  15. Starting with the word entertainment, in pairs person one says a word connected in any way to that word. Person two then says a word connected to person one’s word. Then person one replies to person two’s word, and so on. Continue for as long as possible without repeating any words. (Example: “entertainment, movies, actors, actresses...”)
  16. Is virtual reality technology useful and/or fun? Answer the question using one of these conjunctions to explain why or why not — if, because, but.
  17. Writers, photographers, songwriters, or someone else — who are you favourite types of artists?

  24. Think of your favourite sport or game. Which is better — being a player or being a spectator?
  25. Can you think of ten words in total to describe sport that begin with the letters A, R, and G?
  26. Finish this sentence so that it is true for your beliefs — “Everyone should...”
  27. What types of transport can you list that falls into these categories — cheap, expensive, safe, dangerous, serious, fun.
  28. Make one single sentence that includes the three words (in any order), rule, basic, warn.

  31. Name something massive. Take turns and see how long you can last naming something massive without repeating anything.

  34. Starting with the word chat, in a pair or a group take turns saying a word associated to the word just said. If someone can’t say an associated word, they are out. Keep going until there is one winner. (Example: “chat... gossip... share... give... take...”)
  35. Finish the sentence — “My favourite occasion for giving gifts is...”
  36. As a group, draw a line with traditional written on the left end and modern written on the right end. Write above the line the title holidays. Think of some examples of traditional and modern holidays and mark yourself somewhere on the line based on what you prefer. Share your examples and reasons.

  63. Starting with the word batteries, think of a new word that begins with its last letter (s) and is connected to it by theme. Do the same with the new word and its last letter. Keep going like this until you can get back to batteries by think of a word ending in b. Try to have at least three words.
  64. Wired or wireless? Which is better for you and why?
  65. Preparing food for a trip or buying food on a trip — think of three good reasons for both options.
  66. What social etiquette do we use on public transport?
  67. Taking “the scenic route” or going “as the bird flies”. What do these travelling phrases mean and which is the better way to travel?
  68. How many parts of a car can you name?
  69. Make a list of the top 3, 5, or 10 most annoying sounds.
  70. Which famous person would you like in the passenger seat alongside you on a trip?
  71. Write a short sentence that includes one word beginning with the letter k.

  75. Walking in the countryside or jogging in the city — which is better exercise and why?
  76. As a group, each person name one item they would put in a time capsule. Write down the total contents of the time capsule.
  77. Use the noun season to describe the weather, television, holidays, and sport. Also, what does the verb season mean? (Hint: it’s nothing to do with the same four topics!)
  78. Discuss what kinds of racing sports there are.
